Orkut community of Book Lovers- Books
Charles Dickens, R.K Narayan, Stephen King, Albert Camus, Dan Brown, Richard Bach, J.K Rowling and many more great authors like them are accountable for chasing the hearts of millions of book readers around the globe. Books have a pretty much old history which completed a long and well successful journey from 1800 BC to 21st century, from early civilizations to the present society. Books remained an essential part of every section of educated people,society, city,and country. Even in the age of technology when many things got an additional “e” before their name like e-mail, e-money and e-tickets not surprisingly books also got an ‘e’ with them E-Books. Undoubtedly e-books is a very sophisticated medium of keeping the book without using any space in your cupboard still there are many who prefer the traditional way and like that mildwy and musty smell all over there room with loads of books they read, sometimes over and over. Literature, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Comedy, Spiritual, Science and many more 100s of genre, books and book lovers who are proudly calling themselves book worm, are a very exceptional group of people. Their thoughts are widen, there imaginations are powerful, no I am not a book reader’s psychologist but I felt that when I saw a community of Books’ lovers on orkut.com.
The community known as BOOKS was a place where I was hanging (not contributing) from past one and a half week,reading almost all of the threads posted in a community forum and now I am writing whatever feelings I have about BOOKS, a community on orkut.com, if you disagree with me then please take your most precious time in exploring one of the most eye catching community on Orkut.com, Books. Though beware of worms out there, Lol. No jokes but books is the only place where a large number of people have only one thing to do in there, which is talking and discussing about books. I never saw such dedication and passion towards ones own hobby.
Books is one of the first community on orkut dedicated to books, it got started in the same year when orkut got live that’s 2004. Books, a community created by an Estonian member of orkut who went down from the ownership in the year 2006 and then Satyabrat the present owner started controlling this BIG community which touched its mark of more than 100,000 members this week. Satyabrat was invited on Rated-WOW community and he happily answered some of my questions related to Books as a community. Satyabrat who is a student of international relations, and he also submitted his PhD thesis. He himself is a reader in fact, when joined orkut in 2004 he was looking for community of his favourite passion and discovered books, now taking this community to a more greater heights Satyabrat gives much credits to the members and moderators of books especially Anamika, Pallavi and Shefali (Owner of Book Criticism-a great community) who did all the hard work and provided all the support when it was going tough after his(Satyabrat) take over. Now, a new team of co-owners and moderators Saad and Shayoni, the new co-owners and Aarti as a moderator. Then there is Sherin, not online much but a very precious member and a conscientious moderator and who continues from the old team. These were the main people who helped turn the community around to what it is today. Satyabrat said that “Books is a community to discuss books, literature, author and the other ancillaries that form around the idea of reading and writing”. The community which focus mainly on the discussion have many threads with monthly updates of a new books, new authors, best selling and what they read this month plus what they had finished last month, the flow of hundreds of replies everyday can be seen clearly the great activity of community members mostly from India, Brazil, U.S and other European countries. Vishal (rumi) a student of BBA is a regular member of the Books, fan of the author W. Somerset Maugham, Vishal loves to read literature and fiction, he added that the community Books helped him in many ways by introducing him some great author which he never heard of, he got so many good friends by this community who are really some serious readers. Sherin an elementary teacher is a prominent member of books community said that “being on books has been especially good for me, where I come from there is little or no scope for serious reading, nor is there any reading culture to speak of. The discussions, debates and the multitude of opinions on Books has helped fill in that gap – of not being able to ”talk books’. Also, I’ve gotten a chance to meet many like-minded people and yakk away to glory about shared favorites” Sherin loves to read fictions and auto biographies mainly.
Many members of Books like Satyabrat, Vishal and Sherin have the same thoughts and feelings about this community, which has given them opportunities like meeting many like minded people. Getting to know new authors, new books etc and apart from that, it inspires the members to arrange get together in their cities by making small book clubs where they can exchange their books, share related ideas and discussions offline. Credit goes to the Books a community which gave hundreds and thousands of book lovers a place to interact virtually but the feelings and passion are all real. Thanks again for social networking sites like orkut who gave such a satisfying online structure of making communities which help in building a really wonderful social networking.
