Following VS Followers – What is Your Twitter Account Says?

Posted by : on March 25, 2010 – 8:01 pm9 Comments

In my last article, 3 Basic Mechanism of Tweeting I described how your subject, content and engagement can help you getting most out of  Twitter. In this article I tried to explore the reason behind, why you should have more followers than number of people you are following on Twitter.

While the number of people you chose to follow on twitter will prove your necessity or interest in learning from others, your followers on twitter are your asset to boast your online credibility. Think upon this “How much you are needed for others and how needy are you”. Except those celebrities on twitter, most of us are for both learning and sharing what we know useful to our Twitter followers.  So, it’s obvious to have both, our followers and those we are following. Still, why it makes difference when you are following more than the number of yours followers?

However, it is not at all necessary that every twitter user should follow less and have more followers, but this is a common human psychology of getting attracted to an individual who either pretend to be or most probably is a leader. We logically choose following leaders in any area of expertise (socially, professionally or religiously) trusting that the leader knows more than what we know. Of course, not everyone can be the leader nor we can ignore the truth that “everyone wants to be the leader.”

We are less interested in following someone who is just a part of a crowd, this we usually judge on twitter by comparing between his number of followings and followers. A person who is following 20 people and has more than 500 followers looks definitely a leader of those 500 of his followers than the person who has 10 followers and he is following more than 100 looks just a part of a crowd.

Before moving on, let me clear that it’s your choice on how do you understand and take the above paragraphs. Either you choose to be just look like a leader or be a leader in real; it’s all upon your knowledge, expertise and the way you serve your crowd in your area of interest. Twitter is an open window to calculate your reliability.

So, how you will decide to follow a leader, what are the basic qualities you can notice by just looking at the person’s twitter connections? Here are some 5 most important points you should take care while following someone on Twitter, if you are looking for a real leader.

  1. Follow, only people related to your interest or profession (your profession can be an accountant but you may be interested in music, gaming and even horses) so you can follow two categories of people (by profession, interest).
  2. Follow Leaders, leaders always have huge followers but not necessarily following less, but not more than the number of his followers.
  3. Check how many tweets are tweeted in comparison to the number of followings and followers, say if a person had tweeted 33,000 tweets and have 1500 followers and following 1200 people than he is not exactly a leader you are looking for. This is my rough judgment but I am very much confident about it.
  4. Just opposite to the point #3. If a person updated 3,000 tweets, earned 20,000 followers and following just 13,000 people is also not exactly the leader but this person is worth to be followed. You know, some people are close to be the leader.
  5. The real leader, the one who tweeted 15,000 tweets, have more than 80,000 followers and following only 1,000 people is a leader you are looking for.

An average or a good twitterer always keeps the ratio of his following and follower either equal or not with much difference. Usually they follow back their followers but not necessarily they follow each of their followers.  Here I listed some more 5 Points to be an Average Twitterer with a sound looking followers and following:

  1. Don’t follow even your close friends, if they just made a twitter account to never come back.
  2. Don’t follow anyone with incomplete profile information or no profile picture.
  3. Don’t follow someone who requests you to follow him, though there is nothing interesting about the person, such people can’t become even the part of crowd.
  4. There is no need to say, don’t follow spammers or bots. You always need real people to be in your connection. Don’t you?
  5. Don’t follow a person who doesn’t tweet with consistently resourceful content.

Did I miss anything? How do you think about this follow-following thing on twitter? I would love to dig more with you. Add your comment below to help finding the best.

Yes definitely, nobody wants to follow a just-follower, for that not necessary to be a leader but atleast leadership instinct is necessary, am I right Aditya ;)

  • http://devilsworkshop.org/ Aditya Kane

Yes Sir, nothing beats leadership instinct. But there are two varieties of leaders, Julius Ceasar and Alexander the Great. Both were brilliant tactician and charming to their followers but one (ceasar) was good at delegating responsibility while the other (alexander) was great at doing everything himself which he asked his soldiers to do.
Point to be noted Ceasar was revered and celebrated while Alexander was loved…. that was the end result of their leadership style.

I am sure Ceasar would be the best choice. Because a leader who give values is also being loved by his followers.
