FB Personalizing the Online Experience

Posted by : on April 22, 2010 – 2:40 amNo Comment

Yesterday at Facebook’s F8 Developer Conference in San Francisco, Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg made some major announcements regarding the next version of Facebook. It has been proposed to include features which would provide personalize experience to its users.

Adding to it, Austin Haugen [Product Manager, Facebook] introduced the users to new features: “like”, “Activity-feed” and “Recommendations” by a blog post on The Facebook Blog. With these new features now users will be able to engage themselves into personalized experiences on other sites which are using the following new tools, so called social plugins, introduced today:

Like

This feature has already been on Facebook and helps users to show their friends that they are interested in their status updates, photos, links and much more.

You’ll begin seeing “Like,” or in some cases “Recommend,” buttons appearing on popular websites spanning a variety of industries, including NYTimes.com, IMDb, CNN.com, TIME.com, LIFE.com, Fandango, NHL.com, USA Networks, Levis.com, Univision and ABC.com.

For example, if you like a product on Levis.com, this would be shared with all your friends on Facebook. This new feature would enable them to comment on it and also enable you to have a look at how many of your friends like the Levi’s Product.

The new feature would also let you establish lasting connections to something, such as books, movies etc. So, if you like a movie on IMDb, it will be added to “info” tab on your Facebook profile and then you could receive updates from the movie page.

If time comes when you feel that you wish to remove yourself from linking to something you can always use “unlike” feature. This way things would be in your control and you will not receive any more updates on the topic.

Activity Feed

The Activity Feed keeps the track of your friends’ actions on other websites.

Next time, when you’re logged into Facebook and visit CNN.com, you will instantly see the articles and topics your friends are sharing, recommending and commenting on via the Activity Feed.

Recommendations

Recommendations is a people-powered “most popular” list. It help make sites more relevant to you by highlighting content based on the top “Likes” across a site. For example, if logged into Facebook, you can visit NHL.com and you could instantly have a look at the articles which are liked and shared most by people with their friends.

You can Visit a site tour of these new features and view more examples in f8′s photo album.

It’s important to note that none of your personal data is shared with a site when you view these new features, and they will only be visible to you when you’re logged in to Facebook. Also, none of these features impact or change Facebook’s advertising programs or policies.

We’re already working with more than 75 websites from 10 countries to make the web faster, smarter and simpler. Keep an eye out for personalized experiences on even more of your favorite websites in the future.

says Austin Haugen [Product Manager, Facebook] in his today’s blog post.

This new features will surely change the way information is being shared among the users making it more easier, quicker and interesting. Thereby engaging your friends as well into your ‘likes’, ‘recommendations’ and ‘activities’.
