BumpTop: Another Acquisition by Google
A few days back BumpTop, a 3D desktop interface developer for PC and Mac, announced that BumpTop would be discontinued so that it could be taken in a “new exiting direction”. And two days later it announced that the company had been acquired by the search giant Google. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed yet.
BumpTop was originally developed byAnand Agarawala at University of Toronto as a masters thesis project. Anand has also been Named by Business Week magazine as one of the Top 20 Young Tech Entrepreneurs of 2009. Introduced in 2006, this 3D desktop technology allows you to manage your desktop as walls, floor, hangings…!! It makes your desktop very much similar to the real life desktop experience letting you stack up the boxes with your stylus gestures.
After this acquisition, BumpTop will no longer be available for sale, though you could download a free version for another one week. The landing page reads:
More than three years ago, we set out to completely change the way people use their desktops. We’re very grateful for all your support over that time — not just financially but also through all the encouraging messages from people who found BumpTop inspiring, useful, and just downright fun.
Today, we have a big announcement to make: we’re excited to announce that we’ve been acquired by Google! This means that BumpTop (for both Windows and Mac) will no longer be available for sale. Additionally, no updates to the products are planned.
Notably, it could also be Google’s view to fuse it with its existing Android operating system software to imbue mobile gadgets such as tablet computers with 3D capabilities.
