Facebookers Elect Governor General
Social media site FaceBook has witnessed like and dislike of people for Pop stars, Athletes, TV and Media personality but recently people on Facebook have started a new revolution in history of mankind and that is the selection of political leaders on Social network.
About a month ago Matt Hartley a Journalist of National Post newspaper of Canada just thought that William Shattner the famous Actor who acted in number of TV Shows like Star Trek, films like Psycho 2 and Miss Congeniality series will be suitable for the post of Governor General of Canada. Being inspired by his thought he started a page on facebook with the name “Help Nominate William Shatner for Governor General of Canada”. He was shocked when next day his page was supported by 35,000 + users. This number has gone up by 40,000 + users by now.
This page is suggesting William as a substitute of Michaëlle Jean who is bearing the office as Governor General since 27 September 2005. As end to her tenure is approaching the question of her Successor is housing every mind in Canada. And Matt’s Page is just a replica of this.
According to matt he was not in a serious mood when he started this page. He took it as a joke which he thought will amuse him and few of his other friends. But sometimes jokes become real. His page attracted all other media forms. He was interviewed by two Canadian television networks, his newspaper, several radio stations and, believe it or not, BBC Scotland. This is also the very first incident in social media history where social media has captured attention of masses and other media forms on such a large scale
His joke has called for huge response and has unofficially started a campaign for William Shattner.
Another fact responsible for this news spreading fast like fire in forest is that Canadians are exceptionally active on Facebook. There have been few happenings in past when the Canadian Prime Minister prorogued Parliament, a Facebook group designed to pressure MPs into going back to work gained more than 200,000 followers.
And last year in Ontario, the provincial government put the brakes on proposed legislation that would have placed new restrictions on teenage drivers after a groundswell of opposition to the new laws boiled over on Facebook.
These incidents just demonstrate the Potential and Power of Social Media. Social media as a new platform of democracy or we can say Leaders of future will be selected and elected on Social Media sites instead of Ballots.
