Kuwaiti Blogger On Hunger Strike After Being Detained
Mohammad Abdul-Kader al-Jassem a Kuwaiti Blogger is detained for criticizing the ruling family of Kuwait and he had also called on to remove the prime minister from office, questioning his policies and competence. To oppose his detention Jassem has stopped eating and is preventing his heart medicine also since Wednesday night.
According to his lawyer Attorney Abdullah al-Ahmad “There is no evidence to base accusations on,” Ahmad said, adding that Jassem was being questioned for writings on his web site, blog and three political books he published after they were licensed by authorities.
This is not the very first incident many bloggers and journalists had been questioned and tried in Kuwait which boasts a lot on freedom of press in country. Still Jassem is protected from criticism by constitution .
Jassem is also being supported by a group of reporters demanding freedom of speech calling themselves Freedom of speech campaign group Reporters Without Border. They ask for his immediate release and for all charges against him to be dropped.
It said in a statement Wednesday that the new summons and interrogations for writings going back to 2006 made it obvious that Jassem was being hounded by the authorities.
Reporters Without Borders said, Jassem was sentenced in April to six months in prison for slander against Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser al-Mohammad al-Sabah. The court suspended the sentence pending an appeal.
This incident clearly shows that blogging has power to shake the governments. Potential of something simple can never be underrated.
