Here are somethings which I like and dislike about the new Google Instant.

Likes:

1. Instant search results, this is undoubtedly very time saving.
2. Instant “I’m feeling lucky”. When you take your cursor over any search suggestion you can find “I’m feeling lucky” to its right.
   
3. The search box smoothly slides over to the top and comes up with search results without any kind of overlapping.

Dislikes:

1. The suggestion box doesn’t disappear until and unless one clicks the “search” button or hits “enter”.
2. I didn’t understand how the search terms are organized? For “A” the first suggestion is Amazon and for “B” it’s “Best Buy” and for “G” its “Gmail”
3. No improvement in search results. [At least, it was the case for my keyword]
4. Browser limitation. It will be available only for Chrome v5/6, Firefox v3, Safari v5 for Mac and Internet Explorer v8.

How to turn off Instant Search ?

When you land on to the search results page you can find a “Instant is on” link. Click and select “Off”.

Or you can go to your Preferences page and select “Do not use Google Instant” radio button for Google Instant.

3. Internet Connectivity [it’s a must..!!! how can you imagine Google without internet..!! ]

1. Download Chrome OS:

Downloading Chrome OS isn’t a difficult task. Since, its open source you can download it without any hesitation. You may Google for the download link. But I personally prefer Torrent. Just search for “Chrome OS” at any popular torrent site. Or simply you can use Google for searching torrent files. Enter “chrome os filetype:torrent” and Google it..!! Download the zip / rar file to your system; it would be around 350-400MBs.

2.Download VirtualBox:

VirtualBox is an x86 and AMD64/Intel64 open source virtualization product from SUN and is available under GNU GPL license. It supports a large variety of operating systems: Windows, DOS, Linux, Solaris, OpenSolaris and OpenBSD. Not going much into a detailed discussion download it from here: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

3.Installing VirtaulBox:

I guess, that’s a matter of few clicks. I need not mention it step-by-step. If you have any trouble installing it, feel free to drop in your comments.

4.Extract the zip/rar file you have downloaded.

5.Run VirtualBox

6.Setting Up the Virtual Machine with Chrome OS:

Now click “New” button or click “Machine” in the menu bar and then select “New”. Virtual Machine Wizard box will open up. Now, click “Next” to continue.

Next, give a name to your virtual machine; I named it “Chrome”. Exactly below the name field you will find “Operating System” and “Version”. Select “Other” and “Other/Unknown” from the lists respectively.

Now, define the “RAM” size for your Virtual Machine. It is advised to select less than 50% of your actual RAM size depending on your host operating system. [Host operating system is simply the OS you are using whereas the Guest Operating system is “Chrome” which you are installing virtually]

Click “Next” to continue; now it’s time to setup your Boot Hard Drive. Select “Use Existing Hard Disk” option and click the “Browse” icon.

Click on the “Add” icon at the top and select the Chrome OS VMDK file you downloaded on your system. Click “Select” and then click “Next”.

That’s it..!! click “Finish” and you are done setting up the Chrome OS.

7. Running Chrome Os

After you have successfully set up the Virtual Machine with Chrome OS, select the machine from the left pane and click the start button. Make sure that you have internet connectivity.

Chromium OS welcome screen will appear asking for your username and password. What’s that..!!! How do I know these details..!!! No need to worry, simply use your Gmail Account username password and you will be logged in to Chromium OS.

By default, your Gmail and Google Calendar tabs will open up in the browser.

Click the “Chrome” icon in the top left corner to have a look at your dashboard and available apps.

Reasons behind building Caffeine:

Google strongly believes the fact that the content on the web is growing at a very fast rate. The web has not remained restricted only to text. But also, multimedia content like videos, music, images is increasing on the web. A basic web page has become a content rich web page. Also, the expectations of users keep increasing. A user wants to be updated with the latest information available on the web. To meet up with all the above requirements and many others Google has introduced Caffeine.

How is Caffeine different?

The traditional indexing system which was used by Google has different layers as shown in the image below. The major drawback of this system was that some of the layers were refreshed at a faster rate whereas others at a slower rate. The main layer was indexed every couple of weeks while to refresh other layers it took a significant delay between a web page was published and it was indexed.

But with Caffeine these issues have been resolved. Caffeine analyses web in small portions and updates the search index on a regular basis. As a new page is found, or new information on an existing page is found it is directly added to the index.

Cool facts about Caffeine:

• Caffeine processes thousands of pages in parallel every second and if this were a pile of paper it would grow three miles taller every second.
• Caffeine takes up nearly 100 million gigabytes of storage in one database and adds new information at a rate of hundreds of thousands of gigabytes per day.
• One would need 625,000 of the largest iPods to store that much information; if these were stacked end-to-end they would go for more than 40 miles.
• Undoubtedly, Caffeine is a robust foundation that would surely enhance the search results and provide a rich user experience.

Other big websites live.com on 3^rd and Wikipedia.org is 4^th most visited websites.

I am sure if Google listed data statistics of google.com and youtube.com it could be on top 3.

FTC was earlier appealed that the merger is going to give an unfair advantage to Google in the market of Mobile Phone Advertising. This appeal was today rejected by the Trade Commission saying that “the combination of Google and AdMob raised serious antitrust issues but that recent developments overshadowed those issues.”

The FTC staff had recommended challenging the deal but legal experts say regulators would have had a hard time showing Google would dominate a market that is still in its infancy.

“As a result of Apple’s entry into the market, AdMob’s success to date on the iPhone platform is unlikely to be an accurate predictor of AdMob’s competitive significance,” the FTC said in a statement Friday.

AdMob was founded in 2006 by an entrepreneur trying to solve a problem. Omar Hamoui wanted to build traffic for his mobile site. He encountered complexity and fragmentation – it was just too hard to engage users. AdMob was born to remove roadblocks and enable mobile web businesses.

According to Susan Wojcicki, Vice President of Product Management at Google, they will be closing the deal in coming weeks after getting the permission to do so.

With the rapid increase in usage of mobile phones, mobile advertising also increases, market keeps on getting bigger and bigger day after day. Such mergers are going to be a boon for developers and publishers providing them better advertising solutions, marketers will find new ways to reach consumers, and users will get better ads and more free content.

Healthy competition in any kind of market is very much necessary to abolish monopoly. Customers are befitted by innovation, invention and superior products at economical rates.

Pac Man was released in Japan on May 22 1980. The game was developed primarily by a young Namco employee Toru Iwatani, over a year, beginning in April 1979, employing a nine-man team. The original title was pronounced pakku-man and was inspired by the Japanese onomatopoeic phrase paku-paku taberu where paku-paku describes (the sound of) the mouth movement when widely opened and then closed in succession. Although it is often cited that the character’s shape was inspired by a pizza missing a slice, he admitted in a 1986 interview that it was a half-truth and the character design also came from simplifying and rounding out the Japanese character for mouth, kuchi (?) as well as the basic concept of eating. It was referred to as the ‘peaceful game’ suitable for any age and both genders.

For sure playing it on a doodle is like a walk down on golden memory lane of the childhood when we used to save money to go to a game parlor and spend many hours competing with friends and siblings.

With Google chrome built in, Google TV promises its customers million channels from across the globe via internet. It will be very easy to shift from television to web and vice a versa.

In the announcement today, Google challenged web developers to start coming up with the next great web and Android apps designed specifically for the TV experience. Developers can start optimizing their websites for Google TV from today onwards. Soon after the launch, Google is going to release the Google TV SDK and web APIs for TV, so that developers can build even richer applications and distribute them through Android Market. It seems Google is looking forward to see all of the ways in which developers can use this platform.

Dictionary

Suppose you are unable to comprehend a word then you have to just select it, go to tools menu, Look up word, See definitions and synonyms.
Special Characters From the new window opening select define. You will get synonyms, meaning and link of Wikipedia for further references.

With this feature you can insert the special characters not found in typical keyboards. Go to “Insert” and select “Special Character”select the character you wish to use and click “ok”

If you’ve set your language to English US your ruler will be set in inches. But now, all other locales see the ruler with metric units:
In the future, we’ll make this a preference that can be changed, no matter what language you’ve set for your account.

Comment Scrolling
One of the big pieces of feedback we heard is that the new documents didn’t handle long comments very well. If comments got too long, it became hard to tell which comments were associated with which text in the document.
No they have added automatic scrolling for comments, so whenever you click in a comment it will scroll so that it’s directly beside the associated text.

Chad Hurley, the co-founder of you tube did not miss a chance to say ”I see this great growth opportunity in the online video market and we are positioning ourselves to be a leader”.

He actually went back in time to when YouTube was started, the time when they never actually thought about crossing a milestone as such.

He exclaimed ”I don’t think we could have ever planned or imagined we would get to the scale or the size we are today. We were mostly trying to create a video solution for ourselves based on our own frustrations. We are proud of what we have achieved so far but we have a lot of work ahead”.

He also said that while they have crossed such a milestone there’s also no question about the facts that they have a long way to go.

The site was bought by Google near the end of 2006 for $1.65bn and just about 7 months ago the downloads on the site per day was about one billion so it really seems to have a major milestone.

Earlier years:
The slogan of YouTube was “broadcast yourself” which was actually a way to make people express more easily and openly. The first ever person to express himself was fellow co-founder Jawed Karim who posted a 19 seconds long video called “Me at the Zoo”. It was uploaded on April 23, 2005 and can still be viewed on the site.

The other videos that made a history on YouTube or rather made YouTube make a history were that of a wounded girl dying in front of a crowd during the Iranian election protests, a YouTube interview with President Barack Obama, Ronaldinho’s Nike advert and singer Susan Boyle’s performance on Britain’s Got Talent competition on TV.

Mr Hurley also said that with YouTube they wanted to create a level playing game where everyone was equal and everyone had the ability to be heard or seen.

“And so from cat videos to political videos to “how to” videos to entertainment – and that is you tube….” were the proud words of Mr Hurley…

Currently YouTube hosts channels for everyone from Queen Elizabeth to the Pope and from President Barack Obama to the Iraqi government.

The future of this wonderful platform is going to be even more successful.
In early days this site was known for hosting pirated snippets of TV shows or movies. Even today material gets pulled from the site because of issues over copyright.

But to check piracy YouTube is constantly taking measures.

“They have made a lot of progress about weeding out illegal content,” said Allen Weiner senior vice president of research at Gartner.

YouTube has been working hard to win over content makers as it modifies its service to stream professional films and cash in on a trend towards internet television.

Industry watchers don’t fail to say that YouTube could possibly become part of the Google “media cloud” where people can access films, books, magazines tv shows and other digitised content.

“YouTube is going to change in a lot of ways in the next few years,” Ryan Lawler of video site NewTeeVee.com told BBC News.

Analysts say that while the site has struggled hard to reach profitability since its creation, 2010 could be its year of success.

Bloomberg News pointed out that the biggest challenge facing YouTube advertising is what makes it so popular – its user generated content. Many advertisers are wary of placing advertisements that might run next to videos that might also offend or upset the audience.

To which Mr Hurley replies “Obviously we want to work with everyone and show the value we can bring on multiple levels. It could be as simple as marketing a movie or show to our users and driving those audiences to another place for the experience.

“We are trying to create opportunities for everyone and this is not just about making big deals with major networks”.

So thus, Mr Hurley promises a better you tube with more interaction and move involvement of people.
