Since social networking and blogs have become suitable platforms to express one’s feelings and share thoughts with others, we are witnessing thousands of groups and blogs related to India’s socio-political scenarios being created in Orkut and Facebook social networks. Most of such groups, however, have not been able to expand their work because of certain limitations, such as distance, lack of support and ground work. But Suyash Deep Rai and his friends have been exceptionally successful in their mission.

Youth Democratic Front (YDF) is a social group which was first formed in Orkut by Suyash Deep Rai, a B-Tech Graduate from Gorakhpur (UP), Venkat Kondaveeti, Saurabh Sharma and Ashutosh Kumar. It all started with Suyash being actively involved in different Orkut communities related to India and the problems its people were facing socially and economically. He was not benefiting much by community forums and wanted something which could provide him with real results. Then he, with a few friends, formed a group and named it Youth Democratic Front. Though the members were located in different Indian cities but it never became a disadvantage for them but, instead helped to spread their mission far and wide. And social networking played a major role to make young Indians from all over the world to become aware and unite.

Youth Democratic Front is based on four main motives:

1. United India
2. Justice for Common Man
3. Fight against Corruption
4. Rural Empowerment

This online group is soon to become an organization; it already has its website/ blog, Facebook fan pages and has started assigning tasks to different group members in different areas. All over more than 1000 youth from different cities have joined YDF online or offline. They are actively involved in the ground work to spread public awareness, carry out peaceful protests, meetings and promote their revolutionary mission.

Till now YDF has been involved in protesting against regionalism and organized a Unity Walk in Lucknow to protest division of the state on the basis of caste and language. They also carried out signature campaigns in New Delhi and Bangalore to protest Ruchika murder case and sent petitions to CJI and the Bar Counsel of India to re-open such cases. The campaign received more than 3000 signatures. YDF is also active in a campaign to end corruption and for that it is using RTI (Right To Information) as its main tool, Suyash has filed many RTIs against the ministry of health to display the pathetic conditions of various government-run cancer hospitals which don’t even have a single radiotherapy machine working and this step was supported by many doctors too.

YDF is also focusing on another issue which is Rural Empowerment and has started a project from Rajasthan. Suyash has informed in an email conversation that “On the 6th and 7th March I with my team am going to many villages in Suratgarh district of Rajasthan which are untouched from any development since a long long time. The villagers contacted us through one of  my local friend over there and raised the issue. So we are moving there”.

YDF was started as an online group by a few young enthusiasts and has now become a strong group comprising thousands of youth who have joined hands to make a better India and the world a better place to live in.

The following tips are complied mainly for online communities and groups created inside social networking websites and not for traditional message boards.

Though there is no shortcut for any successful online community but I am sure that if any passionate community owner takes the following points carefully he/she will get the positive results. Still, the main keys for successful online community are Patience and Passion.

1. Start a niche you think you can talk on and on and on.
2. You should have at least 10 good friends interested in same niche you love to discuss. That’s called a launch team.
3. Ask those 10 friends to start discussing every day on your community.
4. Join other same niche big communities and be active there.
5. Being active on other’s community means, make your credibility by providing useful contents.
6. Ask those 10 friends to invite their friends on your community.
7. Exchange related community links, be careful and don’t add communities with same niche or same name in related communities.
8. Don’t spam with new post everyday or many times in a day. Go slowly but effectively.
9. Be friendly and welcoming to new members. Your first impression will be last.
10. Don’t think your community is your community, be more like a member than an owner.
11. Try engaging community members in everything you do in your community.
12. Allow forum games but limited.
13. Arrange threads with [TAGS]
14. Don’t make many threads for same discussion.
15. Add the most active, most knowledgeable and trusted member as a moderator.

29. Say sorry if you did a mistake.
30. Be the most active member of your own community.

32. Try turning normal threads into debate threads.
33. Say I Object! It will create a buzz.
34. Keep inviting others. You need more members to join.

36. Promote your community. There are other 1000 ways to do that.
37. Be diplomatic.
38. Make your community a resourceful group talking on one particular subject, deeply.
39. Be honest.
40. Be patient, any online community needs at least 6 months to grow.
41. Respect your dedicated members.
42. Arrange live chat once in a week with members. Get close, get closer.
43. Try to give more without expecting return. Online community is all about giving.
44. Be focused. You should know what you are doing and where you have to take your online community.
45. Resolve member’s personal issues privately and not in the community.
46. Make your community open to others but keep it moderated.
47. Don’t use funny fonts and tags (@, #) to name your community; it won’t come in search easily.
48. Follow your rules.
49. Do as much as publicity you can of your online community. But not in a spamming way.
50. Show your community’s presence on twitter, Google buzz and other social networks.
51. Use simple but proper English.
52. Don’t be a racist. Don’t even let other community members to be racist.
53. Ask your female friends to join your community. Girls can do wonders.
54. Warn before banning any member.
55. Post or encourage others to post something new and interesting every day.
56. Lost any thread? Don’ panic, check your community spam box
57. Don’t feel lazy to comment on other’s topics.

Our world is full of wonderful, amazing, mysterious and beautiful things, but not every time our 3 lb brain can understand everything going around us. There are many un-answerable questions and queries popped in our mind but we find our self unanswerable and mum. One such question is “Do Ghosts Really Exist?” Many debates and researches are going on but till now nobody came up with any strong proof of existence or non-existence of Ghosts. Although it’s far from science and close to the fiction but there is mystery which never solved.

There are millions of stories claiming the presence of something unseen, scary and weird but there are very less people who really don’t believe in Ghosts. Ghosts have their strong role in even fairy tales. Few days back I came across one online community on orkut social network where members simply loves to talk about ghosts, their personal experiences and those world’s most haunted places and spots they visited.

Ghost- Believe It Or Not! Is a best place to hang online if you love to visit graveyards after midnight or you are watching an unknown shadow in your bedroom. This online community on orkut is a scariest hullabaloo ride for Ghost lovers, Ghost haters or Ghosts themselves.  With more than 98000 members and nearly 10000 topics posted in this one of the largest ghost community on any social network.

This community is created under the banner of Neelam’s Communities and by the creator Neelam Singh, who is also one most active orkut user. It’s a commendable job of moderators that made Ghost believe it or not a successful forum community which stands out from all.

Although the main attraction of this online community is member’s personal experiences and encounters with ghosts and all those hoo-ha things but there are many other interesting threads which are also well nourished by members. Some topics like “Be a devil magician” where every member has to turn the other member into insect, animal, witches by their magical power is a funny game thread, many competitions and even a small flock formed inside this huge group with the name “Ghost Club Of This Community”. Scariest movie threads, debates, polls on ghosts, scary dreams and lots of topics are well discussed in this active community.

By looking at threads and topics it’s just another teenage online community but when you get involved then I am sure you will find yourself in ghost’s company, I am not joking.  My first half an hour in this group affected me so badly that I can’t get any other words from my mind except blood, death, ghosts, graveyard, black magic, unknown shadow, reincarnation, that small woman without head etc. So, if you have interest in any of these words then there is nowhere you can go except this online group of orkut social network.

All these years we social networkers has witnessed many creative, useful, informative, good and even bad use of social network websites. Talking about Ghost on social network looks unusual but I never met a single person in my life that never experienced any creepy thing in his/her life, name it anything either ghost or myth but you cannot ignore that there is an unknown world inside this world. Indeed, I found many groups, fan pages and online communities on many social networks but the only virtual community which impressed me is Snake community on orkut.com. Though, it is not hyperactive like other orkut communities but I found some really remarkable user generated content which can be a great source of information for people who love snakes, studying about snakes or just want to make friends with people who are friend of snakes.

With more than 8000 members, Snake community on orkut is one of the active and one of the biggest communities related to reptiles I found. Credit goes to the creator Adam Dawson, a professional dangerous animal handler from Austin, United States. With mostly Indian members, Snakes on orkut is best place to experience the true and beautiful side of snakes.

I never knew that reticulated python is the longest snake and anaconda is the heaviest and largest. Black mamba in Africa is the fastest snake on our planet that speeds upto 15mile / hr, Anaconda is a non venomous snake, king cobras are the only snake species that build nests for laying their eggs. I came to know all this while reviewing this community; I appreciate the contribution of members in making a large resource base for almost everything about snakes, their life and how was their own experience with snakes, discussions and debates on many rare snake species.

Though there are many interesting threads in the forum but I enjoyed reading the species of different snakes in one thread started by an active member named Jigar. However, it is for fun but it also helped members improving there so called “SNAKITIONARY”. It was the first time I read Malayan Pit Viper, Wolf Snake, Puff Ader, Cotton Mouth Snake and Naja naja.

Another good and important thread I came across in this forum is where members are discussing on ways to handle snakes with responsibility and maturity so that they can save both snake and themselves while dealing with it. With this thread I learnt that it’s very important to know how to behave with snakes whoever comes across it.  As a human being it’s our duty to protect other living beings but unfortunately we often misuse our power and intelligence and harm snakes or sometimes get harmed by snakes.

If you are passionate about snakes or you just want to know about this one of the most mysterious reptiles on planet than Snakes on orkut social network is best place to meet both snakes lovers and also some really beautiful snakes.

It’s not easy to judge the potential of social networking and online communities; however snakes community on orkut is just another great example of positive and constructive use of social networking. More than 960,749 people have already joined this group. The creator has expanded his bet limit from 2 million to 5 million by creating another group with same motive of bringing all who dislike George Bus, online together. The second group has already reached to 92,915 members. OrkutHeroes.com has nothing to do with George Bush but let’s see why these 90k people don’t like the ex-President?

I bet females on facebook can reach 1 million before males do!!! – It’s a group under the category ‘Organizations’, but I find it a fun loving group with no serious intention. Well whatever category it’s under, this group is running a blind race with the same group created for males on facebook. While competing with males, the facebook females have already reached 959,133 members and the discussions are mainly female oriented.

By scanning through the discussion forum I found that most of the females have joined this group only to beat males.

I bet I can find 1,000,000 people who support gay rights – This group is to support gay rights and it encourages discussions related to the subject with some strict rules to follow. With 451,712 this group is going well enough to reach its bet soon, but not so soon.

I Bet I Can Find 1,000,000 People Who Just Want Peace – I wonder why this group is here on #5 position. But this doesn’t mean that only 402,540 of facebook want Peace. Definitely no. At a very first look, you will find Virgo Rulz like any other forum gaming community on orkut but when you dig inside a bit you will notice a presence of strong and close friendly ties between its members who simply love to be with people who are more proud being a Virgo than any other thing in their life. I have always found Virgos as really good friends and an only zodiac which can tolerate a Taurean like me. Though it is my personal opinion about Virgos but what according to me is really great about this orkut community with more than 100k people is their fantastic sense of humor, a kind of place given to each other and a real fun environment created to make everybody feel comfortable and surrounded.

The community description of Virgo Rulz starts with the following lines

After scrolling down the community’s page a little, and simply viewing those 5 recently replied topics, one can easily understand what an active community this is. One of the largest thread has more than 400,000 replies and similarly there are many other such active threads, mostly games threads like ‘Most sweet/innocent person above you’, ‘last person who scraps wins’, ‘rate the pic above you’ etc which has stunning number of replies.

The community was started by an IIT, IIM-A graduate Vikas Agarwal who is also an internet savvy person and when orkut was new in India he was just looking for a community of his interest.  When  asked about the idea of Virgo Rulz, Vikas said that “The community was started with the idea of creating an online community of similar minded people. I thought of various attributes (such as hobbies/ habits, objectives, location, education etc) and finally zeroed on zodiac. Even in those times, there were few communities on Zodiacs (incl. Virgo), the biggest Virgo community had 10,000 members but it had mostly Brazilians and other western people. That’s when I decided to started Virgo Rulz (“VR”) consisting of Virgos of Indian origin only”. Vikas started getting response soon and since then, the community is getting more than 50 joining request every day. It soon became popular among Virgos of orkut and more advancement and changes were added to the existing Virgo Rulz community, like an extension of Virgo Rulz is VR++ where only serious discussions on Virgo zodiac sign are encouraged rather than entertaining games threads. It has 3000 members. More to add, Virgo Rulz expanded its presence to other social networks like LinkedIn and Facebook too.

However, the community Virgo Rulz has comparatively more games threads than any serious discussions but it solves the purpose of online communities to share views, thoughts and make a strong relationship which directly or indirectly affects the society online or offline.

When asked, “Why Virgo Rulz is different than other communities?” Vikas said “VR is probably different in terms of its DNA, people have joined other communities because of their interest which may get change after a while. However, your sun sign is part of your identity and one can’t change his true self. Probably that’s why people love spending time in the community because they are inherently similar in terms of key personality traits.”

The strongest fact of Virgo Rulz which also makes the possibility strong of its long existence is the love and addiction of its members. I am thankful to Vikas for recording opinions of few active VR members which I am sharing with you here:

The Africa I believe am showing is one where its people are intelligent are well aware of the challenges that face Africa, solutions and our problems as Africans…all I all that they are Africans who are more than capable of addressing our problems and moving Africa ahead. There are many solicitous discussions running in the group. The one I loved reading was a discussion thread titled “Three Ways to Help Africa Reach Her Greatness in 2010” by an International writer and speaker Patricia Omoqui where she described the three main points, ‘Find your Passion’,’ Be a servant ‘and ‘Respect Others and Aim for excellence’ which earned many praise worthy replies by fellow group members. Patricia is also writing columns for one respected Nigerian News Paper Vanguard. Though Patricia is an American woman married to a Nigerian man but she is committed to the betterment of not only Nigeria but whole Africa. Patricia replied in the same discussion thread that “As I travel I see untapped potential everywhere I look. Africa’s progress is near to my heart”. This selfless love of Patricia for Africa inspires others in the group as well.

The group is full of activities and discussions, members sometimes play games, they even fight and then become friends again. They dream for success and they are adhering to a better today and best tomorrow. The Africa They Never Show You is just a small start by few thousands of people of the continent which has the long colonial history, military rule, lack of health awareness and crimes but this young 21^st century’s African generation is all ready to change the face of Africa as a destitute land to a fruitful land of hope and happiness. Facebook and other social media tool has become their way to bring a wave of new social reform.

The Shahrukh Khan/SRK Fan Club on orkut was created on March 2004 by an orkut user named, Prashant. It is a dedicated community hangout for their idol, hero and star SRK. Since then every forum discussions and topics on this virtual fan group is revolving around the only subject,” SRK, his life, his upcoming movies and every possible topic related to him. Ayush Vyas, one of the community moderators and a devotee of Shahrukh Khan is excited for the latest upcoming movie “My Name is Khan”. The community members are promoting this movie in their own creative way. “We have planned  a promotional strategy for SRK’s next movie “My Name Is Khan” in which all members/SRK fans from all over the country will watch My Name Is Khan first day first show, wearing same t-shirts”, Ayush said joyfully.

A special discussion thread related to My Name is Khan’s promo has already got more than 300 replies and it’s still one of the most trending topics in the community beside many other hot topics like ‘Community Display Picture rating thread’, ‘the last person is biggest SRK fan’ and ‘best nick name of Shahrukh Khan’ etc.  Though the community has only 50 discussion threads but one can estimate the rate of activities by looking at the number of replies which goes to approximately more than 50,000.
