I was the one who used to hate IE the most. But soon I realized that it was not that bad, as if I was moved by this poor chap’s increasing ignorance on the web. I personally feel that every web designer must use IE instead of avoiding it. And here are a few reasons why I like to use IE:

1. No Installation Required:
The first thing about IE is that it comes preinstalled with Windows. Of course, this is the first browser I always use to download other browsers. Since it comes preinstalled with Windows, newbie on the web are most expected to use this browser. A website must be perfectly developed so as to be a “good” web designer for all kind of audience.

2. Error Console:
IE debugs the code and its error console is a great way to track your errors when you are using a text editor for writing the code. I like using text editors and that’s the reason why I like IE’s error console. In case of other browsers you need to install addons and plugins.

3. Compatibility View:
The “Compatibility View” feature allows you to check how a web site would appear when viewed in the older versions of IE. This feature is available in newer versions of IE like IE 8. This is a great feature since every web designer keep upgrading to latest versions avoiding the older ones.

4. Perfect Rendering Of Web Site:
A site which displays perfectly in IE is most likely to be displayed the same way in other browsers. The reason is that IE doesn’t fix code errors on its own while other browsers do it for you.

The main aim of these IFs is to make profit out of a normal Facebook user and earn a few bucks or misuse their profile information. The most common ways of earnings are forgeries and spamming. Forgery includes creating fake profiles, pages, groups and applications as well.

You might have seen a number of pages, groups and applications using luring phrases and words like: Guaranteed, 100% Working, No Spamming, It’s not a Joke, Try Now, Yes, It Works..!! First X number users get it free, Share with X number of friends and get access, and many more. The sole aim of these pages is to make a fool out of the users. The latest scam on the Facebook is “see who viewed your Facebook profile”. Facebook help center mentions that neither Facebook nor any application can give you a record of your profile views. But, a common Facebook user is not aware of this and fall victim to such scams. The user does all what the application / page says but what do they get at the end? Nothing..!! Only waste of time.

When you use an application, first thing you are asked to do is to allow the app to access your personal information. By this, application pulls in your personal details, friend lists and much more. These fake applications generally ask you to follow a set of steps by clicking a few links. As soon as you click on the links you are taken to a new page and a new application. Then you are forced to grant access to this application as well. In this manner more than one application gets access to your data. Also, the app developer IFs get paid for the ads that are being displayed on their application page.

I created this list after going through over 500 search results on Facebook for keywords: “your profile”. These all are related to the “see who viewed your Facebook profile” crap. So, please don’t waste your time by visiting these sites, apps, pages and groups.

One thing that you will find common in these sites is that most of them have the same design and the design is similar to Facebook. But these are not a part of Facebook.

Application:http://apps.facebook.com/checkyourprofile/ this application asks user to follow three steps to get the results. But these three steps take the user to three different application pages. The user grants access to his/her personal data to these apps. In this manner the IFs get access to your information by four different applications. They get paid by the ads being displayed and the ads user might have clicked. User is at complete loss, no results and wastage of time.

The most recent and popular scamming on Facebook is “who viewed your profile on Facebook”. What do you think? It works?

Let me tell you what actually it is and how it works. [It doesn’t work the way it claims to work..!!!]

When you open the site / visit the link. You will find:

  1. Design similar to Facebook.
  2. Top navigation bar exactly as on Facebook.

And many sites simply use an image of the Facebook page.  The sole aim of such sites is to earn money by placing Pay Per Click Ads, Popup Ads or other kind of ads.

To check, simply click in the “search” box or move your mouse over any of the links. Nothing happens…!!!

The procedure it follows is:

First, you are asked to click the “like” button. This increases the like count of the page.

Second, you are asked to “share” the link on your Facebook profile. This increases the visits to the site.

Third, you are asked to post a piece of “code” on a fixed minimum number of profiles of your friends or community pages / groups. The site claims that it checks the location of the code, so it must be pasted on different profiles / pages.

You will find something working titled as “checking” and some animation. And status as: “Not Completed”.

It is nothing but merely a GIF image i.e. a sequence of images in the simplest form. To check this right click the animation and you will find the option “save image as”.

The last step is to activate the spy for your profile. For that you need to click another link. When you click the link you are surprised with what comes up…!! “I am sorry you have not posted enough times yet! Please try again after you are done posting” huh..!!! and you feel helpless.

Those people have played a prank with you in a very smart manner. You did everything what they wanted to make their site popular. But you are the loser. You don’t get anything out of this crap.

How am I so sure that it doesn’t work? There might be some other app which works..!!

I searched for how to sustain my traffic along with the change in domain name. I found a number of sites suggesting 301 Permanent [Perma] Redirection using .htaccess file. But I did it a different way and here’s how I did it without writing a single line of code and without editing my .htaccess file.

Almost every blogger uses Linux hosting for his/her WordPress blog. And if you have access to the cPanel, you need not worry about the 301 Perma Redirection.

301-redirectRequirements for redirection: Your existing domain must be added as “Parked Domain”. A parked domain has the same nameservers as provided by your Web Host so that, it can also be used to access your site. It is most widely used when you want to access your site with all possible domains such as .com, .net, .org, .info etc. Also, make sure that you have already set your hosting nameservers for the new domain so that your site will not be down when you are shifting to the new domain.  We will be using this Parked Domain for Redirection.

Next, Follow these steps:

  1. Login to your cPanel.
  2. Look for “Change Primary Domain Option”, this feature depends on your hosting. Change your primary domain to “newdomain.com”domain
  3. Add your old domain to “Parked Domains”.
  4. Look for “Domain Redirects / Redirects” option.
  5. After you click on “Redirects”, you will land on the redirection page.

  6. Select type as “Permanent (301)”
  7. Then in next field select your old domain to redirect.
  8. In the “redirects to” field enter your new domain as http://newdomain.com or http://www.newdomain.com
  9. Select “Redirect with or without www.” For www redirection. This is necessary for a visitor may use your domain with “www” or without “www”.
  10. Finally, click “Add” and you are done.

Using these 10 steps you can have a permanent redirection without editing .htaccess file.

You need not roll back to older version, enjoy the latest one. The error message displayed is :

Fatal error: Call to undefined function use_codepress() in C:\Domains\xyzdomain.com\httpdocs\wp-content\themes\thesis_17\lib\admin\admin.php on line 42

wordpress-bug-fixedAll you need to do is download the file “admin.php” located in your Thesis theme folder “..thesis_17/lib/admin/admin.php” using some ftp client such as FileZilla. Open the file with a code editor such as Notepad++. Let me tell you that FileZilla and Notepad++ are open source products so feel free to download, use and share. Scroll down to line 42 and look for the following code segment :

if (use_codepress()) add_action('admin_print_footer_scripts', 'codepress_footer_js');

Now, simply comment out the statement by putting two ‘//‘ [do not include ' ' ] at the beginning. Save the file and you are down.

Use your ftp client to upload the file back to “admin” folder in “..thesis_17/lib/admin/“. Now, log in to your WordPress admin panel and check out the “Custom File Editor“. Yehh..!!! its working.

**Update:Fix: WordPress3.0 Thesis File Editor Bug**

Upgrading to WordPress 3.0 is quite an easy task and is a matter of few clicks. You need to follow mainly these two steps:

  1. Backup your data
  2. Upgrade

That’s quite easy..!! Isn’t it..?? L et us discuss about “How to Backup your data?”

Backup WordPress Posts and Database:

WordPress Plugins provide the easiest and quickest way to backup all your data. First of all, install BackUpWordPress plugin.

  1. You can download the plugin from here: http://wordpress.designpraxis.at/plugins/backupwordpress/.
  2. Login to your admin panel.
  3. Go to Plugins > Add New > Upload.
  4. Select the file location and click “Upload”
  5. After the plugin is uploaded click “Activate this Plugin”
  6. Next, move on to “BackUPWordPress” settings.
  7. Click “recalculate used disk space” so as to have an idea of how large your data is.size
  8. Make sure that “select preset” has been set to “Full backup”. In case you need to backup only your databases then select “sql only”.presets
  9. Click “Backup WordPress Now”.
  10. Since this is first time you are creating a backup. The plugin will ask for the location on your web hosting where you would like to store your data. Select a location as per your convenience.
  11. After the backup is created you can download, view, mail, restore or delete it.backup
  12. Also, the plugin allows you to schedule your backups. So that you keep your data safe with youschedule
  13. You can also add one or mail e-mail address to receive the backups by mail and specify the size limit for attachments. If backup is larger than the maximum limit it will not be mailed to you.
  14. You can also edit the archive file type and chose from available options.

Upgrade to WordPress 3.0

  1. Now, after you have created a backup Click “WordPress 3.0 is available! Please update now.” This is appearing at the top of your dashboard.
  2. You will be asked to create a backup of your files and database. You need not worry since you have already done that.
  3. You can also upgrade your plugins all at the same time with a single click
  4. Now, simply click “Upgrade Automatically”. And you are done.

Your WordPress will be upgraded. If you don’t find any changes in your dashboard log out and clear the cache of your browser. Then log in to check out the awesome “Thelonious”. Alternatively you can check the “Upgrade” option under “Dashboard”.

Although, I have explained the Upgrade Procedure, I suggest you to not to be in hurry and wait for another version like 3.01 or 3.1 which would come up with the fixes for common bugs.
