The very first start up screen asking you to login to your Facebook account makes it very clear that it’s going to be fun using Facebook from this browser. And, when you login to your Facebook account granting permissions to RockMelt for accessing your information, you get into a new RockMelting world of Social Networking.

Let’s check out what’s new here:

1. Title Bar:

Starting with the title bar, you can find a small “RockMelt” tab. This tab contains all the options generally found under various menus of browsers thereby, making it less cluttered and eliminating the traditional Menu Bar. Rest of the space is available for tabs, similar to Google Chrome.

2. Address Bar:

It would be much better to call it a “share bar” rather than an “address bar”.  At the left is your own profile picture. So, you can post updates to your facebook profile simply by one click. You can change your chat status as well.

The right most button is “Open Invite”. It shows currently available invites for you to send. Also, you can have a look at how many of your friends are waiting for RockMelt to be installed on their systems.

It has a newly put “share” button which lets you share your current tab’s URL with an update or send it as a  message to your friends on Facebook, tweet twitter or update on any other connected account.

3. Search Box:

At first look, it might appear to be like any other search box. But, when you type in your search term and hit enter you will see no tab/window/page opens up. Instead, there is a sleek box with search results. When you click the small “+” sign in the bottom right corner of any search result the link opens in a new tab. whereas, directly clicking the search result will open it in the current tab.

4. Edges:

A new term coined by the RockMelt team and an impressive feature as well. At present to Edges, “friends” and “apps” are available. Hope, there would be some more in near future.

Friends Edge:

Next, the edge has two different options to view friends, “favorite” and “online”. You can mark some friends as “favorite” and get their update easily under “favorite” list and all your online friends are visible under “online” list. Simply hover your mouse over your friend’s name and you can see their most recent update in a cool box.

To see updates from all your friends, simply click “show all friends” icon at the bottom of the edge. Here, you can mark your friends as “favorite” as well.

Apps Edge:

Here you can add your favorite websites/blogs to get updates quickly and easily. Twitter and faebook comes by default. J So you can like, comment, share and tweet at the same time. Even if you have some other site/blog added to app edge. You can share the updates from blog/site on your Facebook profile. To add feeds of a blog/site click the “add feed” button and enter URL of the site/blog.

5. Notification Box:

The notification box pops up and provides updates from Facebook whenever either your browser is minimized or Facebook is not open in any of the tabs.

This new browser overall seems to be very much focused on Facebook and its startup login screen is enough to say that. J I very much liked the quick navigation, sharing and tweet functions. You must be surprised why we have changed the theme again ? When we changed from OrkutHeroes to FlockPost we came up with a new look. Being a beginner, it took me a long time to think of the layout, color scheme and other features. Zazo was always besides me to help, motivate and sometimes to irritate as well. We had a lot of fun working together. Even after putting lot of efforts and dedicating time, somewhere in our heart we always felt that “this was not what we thought of.” The old look of OrkutHeroes, a colorful blog with magazine look was much better.

I and Zazo many a times get back to old memories, talk about OrkutHeroes, how it evolved… how it became popular… and talking about technical aspects how it achieved a PR of 4. It has been a long time since Zazo wrote on FP, reason being we got busy with other stuff. Trying our best to achieve our goals and do something which could connect people of our city, Udaipur. Though, we have reverted to the old design I am still happy that I learned a lot while working on FlockPost’s theme. You must not be knowing that I named my theme as “Arromatry”. “Aromatry” consists of two different words Aroma and Try. Aroma, because it was a new design and with new thoughts in our mind we changed to FlockPost. Try, because we wish to move ahead with something new and different. Also, the word “Try” was a synonym to my lovely younger sister’s name “Cheshta” which means effort/attempt.

At last, I would like to say “Thanks” to Zaheer for providing me such a good platform for blogging and introducing me to the world of Internet and Social Media. I hope that everything will be fine and we will soon come back to our Online World of Blogging and Social Media which we miss a lot.

Web designers started avoiding IE for the reason that it is not much compatible with some CSS codes and design trends. Especially the older versions of IE are a big pain to web designers.

I was the one who used to hate IE the most. But soon I realized that it was not that bad, as if I was moved by this poor chap’s increasing ignorance on the web. I personally feel that every web designer must use IE instead of avoiding it. And here are a few reasons why I like to use IE:

1. No Installation Required:
The first thing about IE is that it comes preinstalled with Windows. Of course, this is the first browser I always use to download other browsers. Since it comes preinstalled with Windows, newbie on the web are most expected to use this browser. A website must be perfectly developed so as to be a “good” web designer for all kind of audience.

2. Error Console:
IE debugs the code and its error console is a great way to track your errors when you are using a text editor for writing the code. I like using text editors and that’s the reason why I like IE’s error console. In case of other browsers you need to install addons and plugins.

3. Compatibility View:
The “Compatibility View” feature allows you to check how a web site would appear when viewed in the older versions of IE. This feature is available in newer versions of IE like IE 8. This is a great feature since every web designer keep upgrading to latest versions avoiding the older ones.

4. Perfect Rendering Of Web Site:
A site which displays perfectly in IE is most likely to be displayed the same way in other browsers. The reason is that IE doesn’t fix code errors on its own while other browsers do it for you.

Here are somethings which I like and dislike about the new Google Instant.

Likes:

1. Instant search results, this is undoubtedly very time saving.
2. Instant “I’m feeling lucky”. When you take your cursor over any search suggestion you can find “I’m feeling lucky” to its right.
   
3. The search box smoothly slides over to the top and comes up with search results without any kind of overlapping.

Dislikes:

1. The suggestion box doesn’t disappear until and unless one clicks the “search” button or hits “enter”.
2. I didn’t understand how the search terms are organized? For “A” the first suggestion is Amazon and for “B” it’s “Best Buy” and for “G” its “Gmail”
3. No improvement in search results. [At least, it was the case for my keyword]
4. Browser limitation. It will be available only for Chrome v5/6, Firefox v3, Safari v5 for Mac and Internet Explorer v8.

How to turn off Instant Search ?

When you land on to the search results page you can find a “Instant is on” link. Click and select “Off”.

Or you can go to your Preferences page and select “Do not use Google Instant” radio button for Google Instant.

For example, to create a Friends Chart so the steps are as follows:

1. Select “Friends Chart” template.
2. Set appropriate sharing settings. The default settings are perfect.
3. Click “Create”.
4. Click “Allow”.
5. Wait for a few moments while the document is processed.
6. And here comes the final result. The friends chart contains an analysis of your friends based on gender, location and age group.
7. You can edit it just like any other Microsoft Excel Document by clicking “edit this document” link.
8. When you are done, click “finish editing”.
9. Finally, add a comment, post it to your wall and share it with all your friends. Let them wonder how you did it…!!
10. 10. This is an extra step just to make it count till 10.

I started looking for the solution, search through forums, asked the support team. But, everyone suggested to build a custom function for Thesis Teasers, displayed on the home page, using two separate “div” tags, one for the thumbnail and other for the text.

I have no expertise in php and indeed I was too lazy to write a custom function or look for a custom function code. So I left the things as they were.

I remember the famous saying “If you want a get a work done the simplest way, give it to a lazy person.” So was the case with me and I am happy to say that I found out a quick css trick to overcome those mind boggling [for a person like me] custom function codes.

All you need to do is add this piece of code to custom.css file:

.custom .format_teaser p {display:table;}

To add a Linkedin Profile to your blog’s sidebar follow these steps:

1. Go to http://developer.linkedin.com/community/widgets
2. Click on “Get the code” under Profile section.
3. Now, you can choose from a Pop-Up or Inline Interface.

Pop-up interface is displayed only when a user clicks on the “Linkedin” icon which appears next to your name at the place where code is added. Whereas an inline interface automatically displays the profile with the page load.

1. Copy the javascript code and add it to the <head> section of your wordpress theme.
2. Next, copy the code for the interface which you wish to put on your blog.
3. Finally paste this code into a “Text” widget for your sidebar. Don’t forget to change URL in the code to your Linkedin profile address.

Inline profile is a better option because once put in the sidebar, it will appear on every page of the blog.

To remove this boxes and tabs all you need to do is follow these simple and quick steps.

1. In the top Navigation Menu click “Account” and in the drop down menu click “Application Settings”.
2. Application Settings page will open up displaying your recently used apps.
3. Next, in “Show” dropdown menu select: “Added to Profile”. This will display all the applications which are added to your profile either as tabs or boxes in the left sidebar.
4. Look for the application you wish to remove from your profile page. Click “Edit Settings” link.
5. Click “Remove” link, next to the “Box” or “Tab” text. And click “OK”.

Some applications add both box and tab to your profile. If you think this app is required as a part of your profile you must avoid repetition by selecting either a “Box” or a “Tab” to be displayed. I personally feel that “Box” is a better way because it displays the content as well. In case of “Notes” and “Links” it’s always good to displays “Box”.
