How To: 6 Easy Steps To Twitter For Beginners

by zazo on March 15, 2010

In my last article Simple Guide To Twitter For Beginners, I had focused on most basic points and features of how to use Twitter for those who are still new to this microblogging site. Moving further, I came up with six important points to start your Twitter journey. I hope you will find it helpful.

………………

1. Twitter Profile:

I have seen in many Twitter profiles of people who are not interested in writing about themselves and putting up their display pic. So, why would someone follow a person with less or no identity to show?! In other words, how would you feel talking to someone with no name? It is important to introduce yourself among people who are taking a virtual risk of following a new Twitter user like you. So write down a short intro and put a display pic, if not your own pic, then put at least a graphical image of something which resembles your character. 2. What to Tweet?

Here comes the most important question. On any Internet-based network – either blog or social networking – the only thing which can help you in establishing your credibility is your passion for something. It could be anything from sports, politics, business, science, art or even fun. Try to be the master of your passion… so if you have passion for fun then be the funniest creature on earth and you will notice a bunch of people will start following you, this bunch will grow bigger and bigger as time passes. So, simply put, tweet what you are passionate about, instead of wondering who is going to find you interesting. Read more detail article on What To Tweet

3. Follow and Don’t Follow?

I told you in my last article I tried to explain how to use the Twitter search for looking up people either in your network elsewhere (Gmail, Yahoo MSN) or people you are looking for in Twitter. Start following them but go slowly, don’t start following 200 people in a day when you know that you tweeted hardly 10 times and got only three or more followers. The ratio of followers and following should be balanced. In my next article I will tell you why this is important. But first let me tell you whom you should not be following on Twitter – if you have decided to tweet about a subject which is unconcerned with nudity (which is so sick) , make money online(click here, click there), some multilevel marketing tweeps( big dreams no investments, earn millions) and blah blah…

  • User with a profile picture in the nude.
  • User with no follower but following thousands of Twitter accounts
  • User with no following and no followers but one who tweets regularly
  • User who is not a celebrity but has 100k people following and he/she has tweeted hardly once.
  • User with suspicious or objectionable tweets. Like racially-motivated, abusive or anything you find disturbing.
  • User with a celebrity name but not a verified account, See what a verified Twitter account looks like, below image of Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra’s Verified account.

4. List Tweeples

Make a list of your followers and be updated with their tweets. As your list of following and followers will keep growing you may find it hard to keep up with all the tweets you are receiving from your growing network. So start making a list and divide all your followings and followers appropriately so that you can get an update of all listed tweets without much hassle.

You can make a list of celebrities, bloggers, news tweets, friends, family and so on and so forth. Want to learn more about Twitter List? Here is a Simple Guide to Twitter List

5. Make Relations

You are connected with many people, now start making relations. When you notice that every day you are getting new followers in the list then don’t just be satisfied and ignore them but start making relations with them because you need good friends every time everywhere.

  • Direct message with thanks when someone starts following you
  • Re-tweet often to those high-profile tweeple(people) you are following and also to those newly connected with you and tell them you find their tweets interesting and helpful.
  • Show your gratitude to those who re-tweeted your tweets.
  • Chat casually with your connection with a “hi !how you are doing today”; be active, be helpful and provide value.

6. Tweet Regularly:

Be a consistent Twitterer. Nobody wants to follow a dead looking account, Twitter is Twitter for its non-stopping tweets so try to be consistent and tweet as much as you can but

  • Don’t spam
  • Don’t publicize you own website/blog every time you tweet
  • Don’t keep tweeting non-stop
  • Always follow those who follow you
  • Be updated and be involved with others

To make it easier, I am going to next write a detailed article explaining the above mentioned  points.  If you have suggestions, queries or anything you’d like to add, please go ahead. Post your comments below. Maybe I could help you with something or, more importantly, learn something from you.

For your information, I am not any Twitter expert but sharing with you what I have learnt and still learning each day from my Twitter experience, my rocking tweeples, friends and followers. So please look upon me as a learner and not a master.
