Importance of Your Twitter Profile

by zazo on March 18, 2010

Importance of your online profile is like your identity in the real world. Like you have a name, passport number, address and phone numbers. These all are mediums to recognize you, contacting you and to make relations in terms of your work or personality (socially and physically) the way you present them.  In terms of presenting yourself virtually, online profiles are little different than our real world profiles. Though it’s easier to judge a person in real life, online profiles are all depend upon how true you are to yourself and to others because there is no physical interaction possible virtually.

Twitter, as you know is one fastest growing online community of people connecting with each other for professional and personal reasons, it’s hard to judge or follow a Twitter profile of a user with less details. So, I thought to put some light on how important it is to make a detailed twitter profile in easier, affective and compressed form.

You know how much flexibility and options twitter provides you to make your profile and to fill all information. The four main sections of your twitter profiles are Display Picture, Location, Web and Bio. Let’s go to each section in detail.

Your Display Picture:

“Everyone in this world is not beautiful and nobody in this world is ugly”. Don’t be shy and hide behind the curtains of inferiority (if you have). Come up smiling, show your inner side through your ever glowing face, it has power to do wonders.  Your profile picture will reflect your personality and appearance. Beside the fact that profile picture helps people recognizing you, make sure you keep display picture simple, smiling and natural (without graphics). Let other’s recognize you, the way you are. Certainly nobody will like to follow or add someone anonymous, viewing picture is a normal human curiosity and not many but most of the human being has some influence to judge people according to how one look like.

…………………………

Your Location:

Mentioning Location is essential on twitter because one can know where you are tweeting from, for eg. A freelance journalist tweeting from Palestine will get extra credibility than a journalist tweeting from Baghdad but not mentioned his/her location on twitter profile. Same goes with different startups and people looking for business entity or any HR official searching for an appropriate candidate on Twitter; most probably they will not consider any twitter profile skipped to fill location. Your location will help others to find out which part of the world you are settled and tweeting.

…………………………

Your web/blog:

Where do you wish visitors to your twitter profile page should go to know more about you and your work? Your website or blog will be an additional identity out of the twitter world of 140 characters. Show what else you do other than tweeting. But it’s also not necessary that everyone have blog or websites to show, it again depend upon what is your purpose on Twitter, It will be unacceptable if you are tweeting about “How to Blogand you don’t have your own blog to show. But if you are tweeting about your everyday life, sharing your general interests and talking with friends then nobody cares you have any website or blog to show or not.

…………………………

Your Bio/info:

160 characters limits are not too less to describe yourself but sometimes it’s hard to write if not compiled correctly. If you are on twitter for professional reasons, start writing some top key words related to your professional services and end it by adding your hobbies.  If you are on twitter for engaging with like minded people than your personal info should reflects what do you like and what do you do, It will give an idea what you generally tweet to a user before he start following you.

What is the correct way to write bio in Twitter? It’s obvious that when somebody read your profile information, he/she knows it’s all yours so no need to write I am or I do repeatedly. It will just consume your 160 characters limits. Here are the two example of writing twitter profile information.

WRONG WAY “ I am a blogger staying in India . I love to write on technology, internet and I also like to play cricket sometimes. I am very friendly and I always follow back who follow me on twitter” ( 162 characters)

RIGHT WAY Indian Tech Blogger, cricket player, friendly & I always follow back (61 characters)

The only trick used above is, that I compressed those main keywords which show your professional qualities and personal interest in fewer words.  That’s the best way to write your twitter profile information or Bio.

Additional Tips:

  1. Don’t use a picture with unclear visibility of your face, like covered or semi covered face makes no sense.
  2. Use square image for better results, you don’t need to make size small, twitter do it for you.
  3. Don’t use pictures of celebrities, unless you are that one celebrity in picture.
  4. Don’t use obscene images for profile picture.
  5. Don’t use copyrighted images if you are not authorized.
  6. Use URL shortners to display long URLs of web link on web section of your profile.
  7. Don’t add web link which has no concern with you. It will confuse others.
  8. Don’t add broken links or links to something objectionable.
  9. Don’t use all CAPITAL letters in your bio.
  10. Use keywords to describe yourself than writing long sentences.
