Malicious Stranger Kills Facebook Friend

by Aditya Joshi on May 18, 2010

A teenage girl named Nona Belomesoff was murdered in Sydney by her facebook friend Christopher James Dannevig.

Ms Belomesoff was fond of animals and wanted to do a job in which she may help and look after the wild animals. James Dannevig might have seen her profile on facebook. He also prepared a profile on the same social networking site mentioning himself as a worker for an animal welfare group. After that he extended a hand of friendship to her. Unfortunately she accepted Dannevig as a friend.

According to her brother Gary, Dannevig offered Ms Belomesoff the prospect of a job with the organisation and lured her on a camping trip purportedly to look for injured animals in bushland around Campbelltown, New South Wales. She loved animals and saw this as an opportunity to follow her dream, if she didn’t go she would lose her job and this job was her dream, she just went and that was the last time her family saw her.

When she didn’t returned after two days her family contacted police. Officers discovered the teenager’s body on Friday night.

The first thing the authorities suspected was Dannevig killed her. He is now facing charges of her murder. The local Detectives say the case reinforces the need for vigilance when using Facebook.

A number of pages and groups on facebook are paying tribute to Ms Belomesoff,

reflecting feelings of about thousands of users worldwide.

Detective Russell Oxford, who is leading the investigation, said the case was a reminder to young people about the dangers of trusting strangers on social networking sites.

This accident should be looked upon as an alarm for normal users to check the identity or intentions of the people they are interacting with on Social Networking sites.

When a number of similar accidents are happening globally why don’t we understand. Think thrice before being pal with someone unacquainted.
