There are lots of hot topics you may be interested in, like to talk on movies, music, ones favourite sport, say soccer or hockey. How enjoyable it would be if you are encouraged to discuss anything on your favourite subject online? And what if nearly 90k people would talk only on that one particular subject which is a common favourite?
So, what will you call it? Well, I will call it craziness…oops! No! It should be better known as a community of crazy people. One such community of orkut.com is Physics and obviously the community members have only one thing common and that is the obsession for Physics as a subject. This sturdy subject of science is not less than a game of a checker board for these intellectuals who hails from different parts of world and gathered together on
one of biggest user created online community on social networking site Orkut.com which is soon going to reach it 100,000 members.
Physics, the Orkut community which was created by one guy named Hovig in the early days of Orkut back in 2004 is one of the few oldest communities of Orkut. After Hovig’s inactivity since last one year Saurav Malviya has took over the responsibility to take care of Physics Community. However, Saurav too has busy schedule although he got a very good and dedicated team of the moderators to make things go smoothly and in control in his absence, Sayan Chakraborti a young research scholar at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai, India who really adores Richard Feynman or Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar is dedicatedly giving his precious time and knowledge for this community by moderating its posts, threads and keeping the spirits high of the members and it reflects from the activities of the Physics community that how Sayan and other moderators like Nitin, V, Daniel, Velusamy and Mandar are focusing on and giving their best though Sayan come clean saying that he is still “trying” to moderate the community.
More than 70% of the community members are students of either high school or in university who joined Physics community to get their queries solved or to get involved in deep discussions on theories and debates or to search out reference of books or online articles. Some 5% of the members are Masters in Physics or related discipline, Physics major/honors and 3% of members are graduate students working towards PhD. Remaining some very small percentage of members are either professional physicists, retired or PhD in physics. This survey was performed out of 4940 members to understand the demographics of members which indicate the formal experience with physics of community members. These Physics geeks are blissfully digging out answers and solution by adding their knowledge, logic, or theories and principals of some legendary Physicists they follow.

From Big bang theory to magnetic force and from time machine to reflection one can find hundreds of topics flowing everyday with many new and interesting topics and questions are being added daily, the most effective part of the community is special threads related to career guidance which is a very helpful step to get someone a way for a bright future. The other important threads are a complaint and suggestion thread where members can freely put their thoughts to develop the community also brings a friendship and unity among them. To get some pass time these physics enthusiast get some light chat on general chat thread. A very well organized community all over.
“I guess Physics has a natural appeal and enigma. People love to study it and talk about it”. Replied Sayan when asked what is so attractive about Physics, he was invited on Rated-WOW community to answer some questions regarding Physics community. He was looking very optimistic about the future of the community which he hopes to be better than what it is now as their average members will be more experienced and can go more deep and detailed in discussing physics. I will add and want to ask Sayan that how deep your eyes can go Sayan? How deep this Physics is?, I was not a good student ever nor did I think that someone can go passionate to this extent for any subject like Physics? What a dumb question zazo! But jokes apart, its something very serious and educative is going out their on Physics community and one should make a visit if he or she in any way related or want to get some most tough and confusing equations to be solved. Physics Community is a place where students from different age groups with some more senior fellow members like PhD student to an experienced Physicist get together and having some really great time. It’s an awesome community with a great focus and zeal.
Moreover, a wonderful and most appropriate way of using the advantage of social networking. Great work all future physicists, researchers and inventors!!

well… the picture which emerges in mind, by reading the review certainly would satisfy and make proud a physics geek and would encourage a layman towards the community and eventually towards the wonderful subject “physics”. There can be no words to appreciate physics , but the words used in the review by a non physicist is really appreciative …
The use of statistics and use of comments by a moderator is very wise. I should really say, that referring “physics community” is a very good attempt and a new initiative as nowadays reviewers, web and media entrepreneurs etc are only interested in reviewing technology . But this is a really appreciable attempt to refer PHYSICS. I personally feel it as the best subject and I’m crazy for it and the image of the community is 100 % crystal clear …
commendable job , brilliant work …
Thanks a lot Gaurav for giving such a appreciable comment and also for helping a layman like me to get in touch with Sayan the moderator who helped me in understanding many things which I was unaware of.
