5th of May is the date which should not be forgotten by twitter people. This is the date when the God of Cricket Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar joined the social networking site Twitter, his id is sachin_rt. It is like a milestone achieved by Twitter.
In India cricket is like a religion 90% of Indians are die hard fans of cricket and most are of Sachin Tendulkar alone, this is the obvious reason why Tendulkar is called God of Cricket. With many centuries and records on his name and increasing age, this athlete is still going on.
Among other social network platforms like Orkut, Facebook, hi5, Linkedin etc, Twitter is one exceptionally popular site among Indians providing them two way communication with their celebrities. Lately, Twitter in India came into high light after some bold statements made by Shashi Tharoor on twitter. There are already many political, sports, media and film giants like Karan Johar, Shahrukh Khan, Sania Mirza, Salman Khan and Lalit Modi are using twitter as a preferred platform to pass on their undiluted messages to their followers and fans. Probably this in particular made Sachin join Twitter. Causing a tough competition for other social media sites.
Another Reason for calling 5th of May as the Big Day for Twitter is that within 7 hours of Tendulkar’s signing in and verification of his identity by Atul Kasbekar
and Zaheer Khan
6000+ users have started following him and by now he is having 52,178 followers. Need not to say majority is of Indians. But Cricket is liked by people in countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Australia, England and New Zealand. Fans of Tendulkar among these countries and the countries where cricket is not popular yet having his fans will also be following him, bringing new sign ups for twitter. It is predicted that Tendulkar’s followers will be numbered in million in coming days.
