Few days before when I saw the latest released movie Fashion, my thoughts and feelings about the world of glamour changed drastically. Once I used to be a page3 worm and liked to read a lot about people from the world of fashion industries and Bollywood their gossips, parties, etc but had very less or you can say no idea about the dark side of glamorous and glittering life. I am not writing about the movie fashion, absolutely not. But after watching that movie, which somehow affected my thoughts, I logged on to orkut and my aim was to see how the glamour and so called glittering life has effected the youth online.
My search or you can say a research got a point of destination where I discovered some really interesting communities where people can vote others and the winner can get an award like Mr. and Miss Orkut etc. I was surprised by the response community was getting day and night. I could see so many faces as the community members, all with bright eyes and the excitement was so apparent on their faces that anybody could feel the zeal. The basic of both the things was same, what I saw in the movie and what these people were doing here. But the scenes were so different, at both the places. Here there were no models struggling and keeping aside their values, family and friends and compromising everything, only to become a successful model. Here there were no show stoppers, and no one was going mad after being removed because of a new comer. It doesn’t mean that the passion was missing. No ways, in fact it was far happier, full of life including glamour and gloss.
But then, I thought it might be exactly the way, the movie shows that everything which shines is not gold. So I tried and reached to people actually involved behind all this and tried to find the truth. What came to me were two young guys from different part of India, Debojit and Aamir.
Debojit joined Orkut in year 2006 but actually became active when he got an internet connection at his home in 2008. The first community he joined was Mr. and Miss Orkut and made so many fiends there and then the online space became a second home for him. Debojit is a B.com final year student, residing in Guwahati, Assam, India. When asked about how he thought of competing, he says, “I saw people compete and earn recognition in a community of over lakhs of members. It feels nice to be known and recognized by people, isn’t it?” Off course Debojit, it not only feels great it feels top of the world. Debojit’s first such contest was in another smaller community where he won, and then he tried in MMO, but lost. He tried again and finally won in his second attempt by fair votes. His only view was, if everyone else could participate, then why not me? And his name appeared on the homepage of the community with a tag”Mr. Orkut”. Kudos!

Same is the story of another lad, Aamir khan from, the city Agra who won Mr. Orkut 2008, Best Album, and Best face of Orkut etc. Another dreamer who made his dream comes true, when he actually won Mr. Orkut 2008. Extremely excited by the success he says, that people’s attitude changed towards him and everything became far better from what it was. His parents were also happy from his win. Why not, Aamir got thousand of votes simply by sitting in front of his computer, and the voters don’t need to spend even a single rupee for a SMS, so easy to vote but not so handy to win, says Aamir. Like in reality even virtual competition of such theme has tough competitors but Aamir secured his victory, though virtually but it counts much for a boy from an Indian middle class family where social ethics are more important than luxury and fame.
Like Debojit and Aamir there are several other young guys and girls, like
Sakshi Bansal from Delhi: Miss Orkut October 2007
Manisha from Punjab: Miss Orkut August 2008
Premesh from Surat : Best Personality January 2008
Niti from Delhi: Miss Orkut July 2008……..
And the list continues……Enough reasons to be proud and to show off your virtual achievement though it may stands for a short period of time and may be one day you will count it or even would not like to count it as an achievement. Still, social networking and such communities are becoming good platform to perform, to present, to socialize and to show off, to get the taste of fame, glory and glitter and are providing a wonderful space for them to cherish their dreams, being at home, maintain their dignity, do not annoy their parents, and yet become a star!
Who knows if today’s Debojit can be tomorrow’s reality show winner or a young boy Aamir from Agra can be the next roadie? We don’t know but this is a fact that glamour has been winning the majority of youth’s attraction since many decades. Now, it entered into the virtual world too making it a virtual ramp for young internet users who think they can make it virtually more better than in reality or perhaps its just a warm-up session for them before entering into the real world of glamour.
